Emit Jenkins, Sr., helped to rescue William H. and LaDonna A. Sims from burning, Chicago, Illinois, July 13, 1977. At night, when fire broke out in a bedroom in a first-floor apartment, William, 8, and LaDonna, 15, went into the adjoining kitchen, where the back door opening was fully covered by a metal gate. Jenkins, 64, apartment building manager, bent one corner of the gate and crawled through the opening into the smoke-filled kitchen. He crawled to William and was dragging the boy toward the door when he was met by a policeman who had entered via the gate opening. While the policeman took William outside, Jenkins crawled to LaDonna and began dragging her toward the gate. The policeman returned and aided in taking LaDonna outside. Jenkins was the last to emerge from the kitchen, which very soon afterward was filled with flames. William, LaDonna, and Jenkins recovered from burns they had sustained. 55883-6308
