Emil Allen Juhola helped to save Edward H. Newmyer from drowning, Fort Bragg, California, February 23, 1975. When a boat in which he was riding capsized in the Noyo River in water eight feet deep, Newmyer, 74, tried to swim back to the craft but had difficulty because of his clothing. Juhola, 20, bulldozer operator, entered the cold water and swam 125 feet to Newmyer, who by then was only semiconscious. Juhola towed Newmyer to the overturned boat but had difficulty holding him alongside the bobbing craft because of nearby turbulence. By the time other boats arrived to pick them up, Newmyer was unconscious and Juhola was very cold and fatigued. Both men recovered from effects of the cold water.
