Ellen A. Riley saved John C. Herbaugh from burning, Endicott, New York, November 9, 1990. At night, Herbaugh was in his two-story, frame house when fire erupted in the first-floor den. A neighbor, Mrs. Riley, 30, office cleaner, saw flames issuing from the house and, after instructing another neighbor to call the fire department, went to the scene. Assuming Herbaugh was home, Mrs. Riley entered the house through the front door and called his name but received no response. Mrs. Riley then crawled to the den and in the light of the flames in that room saw Herbaugh on a couch. She grasped him by the shirt and pulled him out of the den and toward the front door. He revived; Mrs. Riley then helped him out of the house to safety.
