Elizabeth R. Mason saved Anne R. Daley, 57, Edward R. Sammis, 38, director of publication, and Margaret H. Sammis, 35, from drowning, New Suffolk, New York, July 22, 1939. A sailboat, in which Mrs. Mason, 25, and the others were riding in Little Peconic Bay, capsized a mile and a quarter from shore; and the four got hold of it. There was wind of 25 m.p.h. , and choppy waves were two to three feet high. The boat rocked, and the women sustained bruises and became nauseated. After having held to the boat for 20 minutes, Mrs. Mason, who was convalescing from a serious operation and who had been advised by a physician not to swim, swam toward shore for aid. After having swum several hundred feet, she gave herself up for lost but kept on swimming for an hour and for more than a mile. Her strength failing, she reached water five feet deep; and floundering awkwardly, from time to time she touched bottom and sprang forward. She was dizzy, weak, and nauseated. A man swam to her from shore, and she told him to get the others and then fainted. She was taken to shore and recovered. Her companions, almost exhausted, were rescued by men in boats. 38005-3163
