Elizabeth M. Hanley, 15, telephone operator, sustained fatal injuries rescuing Mildred T. Green, 10 months, from burning, Jamaica, New York, March 15, 1924. Mildred was in the kitchen of a small frame house when a fire started in the living room, which adjoined it. After Elizabeth had followed Mildred’s mother to the door when she left the house to get water, Elizabeth ran to the kitchen, picked up Mildred, and took her into the living room. The room was filled with dense smoke. As Mildred’s mother then opened the door into the living room, Elizabeth thrust Mildred into her arms, and Mildred’s mother left the house. Elizabeth a little later fell out the door, terribly burned, and she died the same day. Mildred died of burns two days later. 24122-1946
