Elijah Kawash, 23, weaver, saved Richard Hajjar, 21, weaver, from drowning, Methuen, Massachusetts, August 16, 1914. Hajjar became distressed 100 feet from the bank of Walsh’s Pond. Removing his coat, Kawash swam to Hajjar. Feeling unable to return to shore, Kawash supported Hajjar, being submerged several times in his efforts to keep Hajjar afloat. Five minutes after he reached Hajjar, a rowboat appeared and went to their rescue. Both were nearly exhausted, but they recovered. 1358-1218
