Eli J. Hardin died saving James H. Seay from suffocation, Dalton, Georgia, August 13, 1913. Seay, 43, farmer, was overcome in a well 28 feet deep. Hardin, 44, farmer, learned of the accident and ran a half-mile to the well. He then stated that there was gas in the well. He stepped into a bucket attached to the well rope and had men lower him into the well. One of these men had refused to go to the rescue before Hardin reached the well. Hardin tied Seay securely to the bucket, and the men hoisted Seay to the opening in the covering of the well. A delay of five minutes occurred getting Seay through the opening, and after he was taken out, Hardin was forgotten for 10 minutes. He was then unconscious. No one would descend for him and he was not taken out until two hours later, when hooks were used. He was dead. Seay was revived. 12902-1126
