Eldege Gagne, 9, schoolboy, died attempting to save Leo Piteau, 9, or Joseph A. Gosselin, 12, schoolboys, from drowning, Augusta, Maine, August 2, 1918. Leo and Joseph attempted to paddle a leaky rowboat across Bond Brook, but the boat filled with water and overturned 25 feet from the bank. Leo and Joseph struggled close together in water 15 feet deep, and Eldege dived from the bank and swam toward them. Eldege got within reaching distance of them, when Joseph seized him around the neck from behind and hung at his back. The three boys sank almost immediately and were drowned. 19082-1683
