Edwyn B. Lewis, 30, laborer, died attempting to save W. Winfred Wonch, 9, from drowning, Deer Park, Washington, September 14, 1919. Winfred, while crossing a mill pond on floating logs, slipped between two logs and fell into the water, where the depth was about eight feet. Lewis, who was on the bank, with the aid of a pike pole walked on the logs 30 feet to Winfred, who had just succeeded in climbing upon a log. Winfred stood behind Lewis and held to his clothing while Lewis shoved other logs aside and attempted to float the log to the bank. The log turned, and both fell into the water. Lewis swam a stroke or two in open water, then disappeared and was drowned. Winfred climbed on a log and was brought to the bank later. 19977-1629
