Edward W. Klinski saved Robert L. Lansdowne from suffocation, Cottrell, Oregon, October 6, 1932. Lansdowne, 39, farmer, was overcome by carbon monoxide in a well 40 feet deep and fell from a ladder to the bottom. He lay against the wall, behind the ladder, in a crouched position, with water to his waist. Klinski, 32, farmer, who knew there was gas in the well, was lowered in a bucket by means of a windlass. After trying to pull Lansdowne from behind the ladder, Klinski tied the end of a rope, the other end of which was tied to the drum of the windlass, around Lansdowne and pulled him from behind the ladder. He felt a choking sensation and his breath becoming shorter, and he held to the cable to maintain his balance. Klinski and Lansdowne then were pulled up by means of the windlass. Klinski was weak and ill for several hours. Lansdowne remained unconscious for four hours, but he recovered. 32626-2791
