Edward T. Hammer, 47, railroad supervisor of telegraph and signals, saved Lillian Ruch, 26, from being killed by a train, Sunbury, Pennsylvania, August 9, 1945. Miss Ruch rapidly walked onto a railroad crossing, tripped, and fell on a track on which a passenger train was approaching at a speed of 15 m.p.h. Hammer, who was waiting for the train to pass, ran 12 feet to her. Standing between the rails, he took hold of Miss Ruch under her arms when the locomotive was within 30 feet of them and stepped back to the rail as he pulled her to her feet. Keeping hold of her, he ran backward off the track, and they were five feet from the rail when the locomotive passed them at a speed of five m.p.h. 40500-3423
