Edward R. Irish, 62, railroad trackman, saved Gerald W. Wilson, 2, from being killed by a train, Bridgeport, Michigan, October 13, 1947. Gerald wandered onto a track on which a passenger-train was approaching at a speed of 60 miles an hour. Irish, at work on the track, ran 200 feet along it over ballast of loose gravel toward the train to Gerald, arriving as the locomotive was within 15 feet of them. Irish grasped Gerald and swung him away from the track and into a ditch. As he released Gerald, Irish fell backward and rolled into the ditch, barely clearing the locomotive, which passed at a slightly reduced speed.
