Edward M. McCullough, 40, shoe buyer, saved Susan Glick, 25, from burning, South Lake Tahoe, California, August 11, 1968. A small airplane containing Miss Glick, Jonathan C. Krass, the latter’s wife, and the pilot crash-landed in a meadow; and flames broke out on one wing around a fuel tank from which gasoline was leaking. All occupants of the aircraft were badly injured, but Krass managed to climb out onto the burning wing. McCullough and Douglas M. Barclay ran to the wreckage. Both climbed onto the burning wing in an area free of flames. McCullough reached into the cabin and drew Miss Glick from it; while Barclay went to Krass.who was dazed and had fallen into the flames. McCullough carried Miss Glick a safe distance from the airplane and then returned to the burning wing, where Barclay was assisting Krass. Together they moved Krass to safety and beat out flames on his attire. McCullough, Barclay, and others who had arrived went to the side of the wreckage away from the flames, climbed onto the other wing, and removed the remaining persons from the cabin of the airplane, which soon was completely afire. Krass sustained burns, which healed; and he and the other occupants of the plane recovered from their injuries.
