Edward J. McHugh, 31, electrotyper, saved Thomas F. Waldron, 15, school-boy, from drowning, Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, September 5, 1938. While rowing a leaky rowboat in the Atlantic Ocean, Waldron lost an oar; and the boat drifted seaward with wind and tide. From shore McHugh, who feared Waldron might jump from the boat, swam toward it. The water was cold, and he felt a numbing effect. After swimming three-quarters of a mile, he reached the boat. He was partly exhausted and had to be aided into the boat but helped to bail water from it. Soon afterward Coast-guardsmen in a boat reached McHugh and Waldron, and they were rescued.
