Edward J. Havens died saving George P. McGuire from drowning, Hartford, Connecticut, April 1, 1934. George, 8, drifted on a raft five feet square on the North Branch of Park River. At a point four feet from the bank, he jumped into neck-deep water. There was a current of 4 m.p.h., and George was unable to get to the bank. Edward, 12, schoolboy, who could not swim, jumped into the water to his neck and gave George a shove toward the bank. George got hold of a bush and with aid crawled out of the water. When next observed, Edward was drifting in the current. He was taken 40 feet, disappeared, and was drowned.
