Edward F. McGuire, 35, stationary engineer, saved Lillian F., 20, and Jane E. Andreas, 10, from drowning, Tuscarawas, Ohio, July 4, 1914. Jane waded into deep water near the bank of the Tuscarawas River, and Lillian got into deep water while trying to assist her. Neither of them could swim, and Lillian was dressed. They went beneath the surface, Lillian holding to Jane. McGuire dived from a dam and swam about 100 feet to them. He grasped Lillian’s hair and pulled her to him, and she grasped the bib of his overalls. Jane was semiconscious. McGuire put his right arm around Lillian’s waist and swam about 20 feet with them, then a man waded in a foot or two, held to a root, and extended a hand to him. Another man waded in and grasped Lillian, and she and Jane were pulled to the bank. They soon recovered. 13348-1163
