Edward F. Kahoun, 21, assistant pressman, died attempting to save Rose C. Mares, 16, from drowning, McHenry, Illinois, June 23, 1923. Rose attempted to touch bottom in a hole in the Fox River six feet from the wall of a lock, where the water was at least six feet deep, and she went under the surface, rose, and struggled, calling for help. Kahoun ran from the bank about 50 feet over the lock walls and dived from the end of the wall near Rose. As he rose to the surface four or five feet from the wall, he called for help, and he then sank and was drowned. Rose surfaced again after he sank, but she then disappeared and was drowned. 23411-1919
