Edward B. Haskins died attempting to save Dorothy J. and Helen K. Eastwood and Helen G. Hart from drowning, Darvills, Virginia, July 24, 1941. While wading in a pond, Dorothy, 16, and Helen, 18, unexpectedly stepped into water 10 feet deep. Dorothy grabbed both Helen and Mrs. Hart, 18, and all were submerged and struggled 15 feet from the bank. Haskins, 53, construction foreman, ran 150 feet to the pond. Fully clothed, he waded 10 feet and then with extended arm lunged toward one of the three, all of whom were bobbing up and down. He did not reach any one but was submerged and did not reappear. Helen paddled several strokes to wadable water, and a woman waded to her and took hold of one of her arms. With her other arm Helen pulled Mrs. Hart and Dorothy in turn to wadable water. 39847-3372
