Edmund J. Kates died attempting to save Charles H. McBride from drowning, Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, June 8, 1921. McBride, 53, railway mail pay expert, swam to a point in the Atlantic Ocean 130 feet from shore, where the water was eight feet deep, and then called for help. The water was very rough, and there was a strong current. Kates, 37, engineer examiner, swam 70 feet toward McBride but became helpless 100 feet from shore. A lifeguard swam to Kates and took him to shore. He had collapsed and become unconscious about the time they reached wadable water. McBride drifted to a point 300 feet from shore and was then reached by a man in a boat and taken to shore. Neither Kates nor McBride could be revived. 21987-1760
