Edith Margaret Mackenzie, 17, student, saved N. Marian Wood, 15, from drowning, Redondo Beach, California, July 17, 1919. While Marian and Edith were bathing in Santa Monica Bay, Marian got into a hole about 75 feet from shore. Edith waded a few feet and swam a stroke or two to her, reaching her as she rose to the surface. Edith took hold of Marian with her right hand, and they were swept 10 feet farther from shore and were frequently submerged by the breakers. Aided by the surf, Edith then swam about 70 feet with Marian and waded to shore with her. 19722-1592
