Edgar L. Hughes helped in the rescue of a boy from burning, Eureka, California, July 10, 1994. A 12-year-old boy was unconscious in the back seat of his family’s burning automobile following a traffic accident. Issuing from the rear of the car, flames spread to its interior, covering part of the back seat and ceiling. Hughes, 48, pipefitter, responded to the scene immediately from his nearby home. After another man entered the car in an unsuccessful rescue attempt, Hughes entered the car through its passenger door and pulled on the boy, but he too was unable to free him. In a subsequent re-entry by the other man, the boy was freed. He was severely burned and required extensive hospitalization. Hughes recovered from minor burns to his face and arms.
