Eddie J. Cannon saved James S. Tyson from burning, Morven, North Carolina, January 25, 1995. Tyson, 90, was in a bedroom at one end of a mobile home after fire broke out in the opposite end. Blind and incapacitated, Tyson yelled for help. Cannon, 36, was alerted to the fire from a neighboring residence. He entered the mobile home through its front door, went to Tyson’s bedroom, and attempted to remove Tyson but was repelled by smoke. He exited the structure, then re-entered and returned to Tyson’s room; flames had by then spread inside the mobile home, and smoke and heat had worsened as well. Cannon picked Tyson up and carried him outside to safety. The mobile home was engulfed by flame within minutes.
