Eddie G. Mathews, 50, transfer man, saved Nettie E., 31, and O. Ralph Wilson, 6, from being killed by a train, Hillsboro, Texas, October 28, 1922. Ralph, who was a few feet from a track on which a train was approaching at a speed of 20 m.p.h., started to run across it to his mother. His mother caught him in her arms as he was about to step from the track and then fell with him across the rail. Mathews ran 15 feet to the track and, leaning over the rail, grasped Mrs. Wilson’s arm with one hand and Ralph’s arm with the other hand as the locomotive was 10 to 15 feet away. He dragged them clear of the track just before the train passed at undiminished speed. 22925-2031
