Earl Murphy, 22, still cleaner, attempted to save John M. Cochran, 49, still cleaner, from suffocation, Lawrenceville, Illinois, July 11, 1923. (See case of G. FRANKLIN JUDY.) After Judy was overcome, Murphy descended the ladder to the bottom with a rope and put it around Cochran but did not tie it. He dragged Cochran to the ladder and ascended, holding the rope around him as men at the top drew Cochran upward. Murphy was affected by gas as his head reached the top of the still, and he let go of the rope, which released Cochran, who fell back to the bottom. Men at the top grasped Murphy and helped him out, and he soon recovered. 23712-1878
