Earl J. Lowman, 13, schoolboy, saved Madeline Philblade, 14, from drowning, Galesburg, Illinois, January 5, 1916. Madeline and a young man broke through the ice on Highland Lake into water seven feet deep. The ice kept breaking and prevented her from climbing out. Earl, who could not swim, skated to her, knelt three inches from the hole, seized her hands, and worked back onto safe ice, pulling her after him. The young man in the water crawled out at another side of the hole at the same time. Water flowed onto the ice around Earl and the ice under him crackled as he drew Madeline out, but it did not break. 15925-1308
