E. Sylvester Mahan, 35, farmer, saved John Bemis, 21, farmer, from suffocation, Lewis, Indiana, July 14, 1914. Bemis descended into a 28-foot well that contained dynamite fumes and was almost immediately overcome. His father, the only person at the well, called for help, and Mahan, having run 2,000 feet, was lowered on a rope. Although he became very short of breath, Mahan succeeded in fastening the rope to Bemis. Bemis was raised, and the rope was returned to Mahan, who hooked it about himself and was drawn out. Bemis was apparently dead but was revived four hours later. 15858-1158
