E. Maurice Horning died attempting to save William C. Blankenship from drowning, Richmond, Virginia, June 24, 1951. Blankenship, 20, sawmill hand, who could not swim, lost his hold on an inflated tire-tube and was submerged briefly in water 15 feet deep 10 feet from the bank of a pond in a quarry. He seized a youth swimming nearby and struggled, and the youth called to Horning, 21, sign shop helper, for aid. Immediately Horning, who was in deeper water 100 feet away, swam to Blankenship, reaching him just after the other youth freed himself and swam toward the tire-tube close to the bank. Blankenship grasped Horning tightly around the neck, and they sank struggling and were drowned. Their bodies were recovered within an hour. 42384-3760
