Dwain Hammond died attempting to help save Susann M. Tallman from electrocution, Whiting, New Jersey, August 16, 1989. Mrs. Tallman, 82, was semi-conscious inside her car after it left the highway and struck a utility pole, causing 7,200-volt power lines to fall. Driving by, Hammond, 44, real estate investigator, stopped at the scene. As fire broke out in the vicinity of the car, Hammond moved to its passenger side to render help. He made contact with one of the lines, which was suspended near the car, and was fatally shocked. Mrs. Tallman was removed from the car by others. She was hospitalized for two weeks for her injuries.
