Doris Jean Miller saved L. Franklin O’Brien from drowning, Millerville, West Virginia, June 6, 1944. From a boat that was moored to a tree the bank, Franklin, 11, fell into Miller Creek and was twice briefly submerged nine feet from the bank. Doris, 16, schoolgirl, who was fully clothed and could not swim, jumped into the water from the opposite bank and waded to water that reached above her mouth. After making three short jumps toward Franklin, each time being submerged, she reached under the surface and got hold of Franklin’s hair. She sprang to the surface, and he grasped her with both arms. Lunging and twisting, she moved five feet to wadable water and then waded to the bank. 40302-3396
