Donna A. McCullough attempted to save Mary J. Hays from drowning, Zelienople, Pennsylvania, August 21, 1921. Miss Hays, 23, attempted to touch bottom while swimming in a pool 20 feet from the bank. She sank momentarily, swallowed water, and lost control of herself. Donna, 16, stenographer, swam to Miss Hays, who immediately flung both arms around Donna’s neck and attempted to climb upon her shoulder, forcing her under water. Donna could not free herself and could make no progress toward the bank with Miss Hays. A sister of Miss Hays then swam to them, and Miss Hays released her hold on Donna with one hand and took hold of her sister. Donna freed herself from the other hand of Miss Hays, struggled to the surface, and swam about five feet toward the bank, and a girl then grasped her hand and drew her to the bank. She was exhausted. Miss Hays was rescued by her sister and girls who extended a stick to her. 21869-1715
