Donald Ray Jackson died attempting to save Charles E. Billups from drowning, Alexandria, Louisiana, June 4, 1971. Charles, 8, and Donald, 12, were floating on a bayou an a makeshift raft when it overturned and dumped them into muddy water 25 feet deep. Donald was a poor swimmer but managed to reach the bank. Charles floundered and called for help. Donald swam 30 feet back to Charles, who grasped him about the head. They were submerged briefly at least once. Charles still had his hold on Donald when they again went under and did not reappear. Their bodies later were recovered.
