Donald Howard Green rescued Shannon R. Hamrick from burning, Los Angeles, California, December 16, 1986. Shannon, 17, was aflame in the driver’s seat of her subcompact car after a head-on collision with another vehicle. From his vehicle nearby, Green, 30, quality control inspector, ran to the burning car and smothered flames on Shannon with his jacket. Despite increasing flames on the car, Green then obtained a hold on Shannon and pulled her from the car. Others arrived; they helped to carry Shannon to safety and extinguish the remaining flames on her. Shannon was hospitalized a month for third-degree burns to 40 percent of her body. Green recovered from lesser burns.
