Donald F. Melanson helped to rescue Daniel J. E. Williams from burning, Moncton, New Brunswick, October 16, 1992. Williams, 30, lay on the floor of the living room of his basement apartment after fire erupted in the adjoining kitchen and filled the apartment with dense, black smoke. A neighbor, Melanson, 44, off-duty firefighter, entered the apartment and, crawling, searched for Williams. Guided by his moaning, Melanson located Williams, then grasped him and pulled him to the door. Firefighters arrived shortly and removed Williams to safety. Williams was seriously burned and required lengthy hospitalization. Melanson suffered ill effects from exposure to smoke, causing him to seek medical treatment. Both men recovered.

Obituary
With heavy hearts and fond memories, we sadly announce the peaceful passing of Donald “Don” F. Melanson, on March 19, 2026 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB at the age of 78.
His journey here was marked by warmth, bravery, and an unwavering dedication to his family and community. Don previously lived in Moncton but later resided in Harvey Station, NB with his wife Wanda.
Born to David and Ruth Melanson (nee Rogers), Don grew up embracing the values of kindness and integrity. Though we mourn his passing, we take solace in knowing he is now reunited with his parents and beloved twin sisters Judi LeBlanc and Kathryn Peachey, and his brothers-in-law Michael Peachey and Wanda’s brother Lloyd Morgan.
Don’s legacy lives on through his cherished wife, Wanda (Morecraft), who stood by his side with unwavering love and support. His spirit continues to shine brightly through his daughter Lynn (Sheldon) Killam, and his son David (Jess) Melanson. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Emily (Tyler) Killam and Justin Killam, and great grandchildren, Braydon, Braxton, and Owen. He is survived by Wanda’s sons Matthew (Jessica) Morecraft and Jesse (Tina), whom he treasured his relationships with, and Wanda’s grandsons, Ethan and Alex Morecraft, who brought him endless happiness. Don shared a special bond with his brother-in-law Wayne (Sharon) Morgan, sister-in-law Brenda (Bob) Willar and sister-in-law Cheryl Morgan, along with his nieces and nephews and extended family members and many friends.
Don dedicated 38 years of his life to the Moncton Fire Department, rising to the rank of Captain before retiring in 2009. His courage and selflessness were exemplified in 1992 when he, along side another fire fighter, was awarded the Governor General of Canada Award for the Medal of Bravery and also The Carnegie Medal for Bravery for rescuing a Moncton resident from a burning building.
Away from his noble profession, the racetrack was where Don found excitement, friendship, and joy. He had a true love for stock car racing. He first got involved with Hinson and Rodney Ashe and their race car, proudly known as the “Chevy Eater” #15 Mustang. In later years he continued that passion as a devoted crew member for #48 race team with Dave O’Blenis and family. His passion for the outdoors was boundless – whether riding his motorcycle, four-wheeling, boating, golfing, hunting, fishing in Alaska or tending to his vegetable garden. Time spent at Howie’s camp or on adventures, and hauling trucks with his best friend Ralph in Omaha, Nebraska, brought him immense happiness. Don also found great joy in cooking and spending time at the camp with family, moments that meant the world to him.
In the last few years, Don drove truck part time for Armour, work that he truly enjoyed. During that time, he formed many lasting friendships with those he worked alongside.
Don was a man whose warmth and generosity knew no bounds. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel appreciated and valued, always offering a friendly smile and kind words. A true gentleman, his heart of gold touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to know him.
