Donald E. MacPherson, 14, schoolboy, saved Charles E. Herndon, 16, schoolboy, from drowning, Barnstead, New Hampshire, June 16, 1944. Charles and Donald were on a float that was anchored in a pond at a point 35 feet beyond the end of a pier that extended 70 feet from the bank. Wadable water extended but 20 feet from the bank. Charles started to swim to the pier and floundered at a point 10 feet from the float. Donald dived to Charles and took hold of him around his chest. A struggle ensued, in which both were submerged. Donald rose, dived and got hold of Charles’s hair, and pulled him to the surface. Changing his hold to around Charles’s neck, Donald swam five feet toward the float. Charles continued to struggle somewhat. Meanwhile two girls swam from the pier to the float and towed it to Donald, who pulled Charles onto it, aided by the girls. Charles was semiconscious but recovered. 40244-3376
