Derek Lambert saved James P. Powell, Sr., from being struck by a boat, Andrews, South Carolina, October 9, 1988. While boating on Wee Tee Lake, Powell fell from his 14-foot vessel, the propeller of its motor then striking his hands and inflicting severe cuts. The boat continued at a high rate of speed, encircling him. Derek, 16, high school student, witnessed the accident from the bank. He immediately dived into the lake and, despite the danger of being struck by the boat, swam to Powell, who was just below the surface of the water. Derek seized Powell and pulled his head out of the water, then swam to the bank with him. Powell was hospitalized for four days and required surgery for his wounds.
