Dennis L. Johnson saved Christopher P. Eggleston from drowning, Scenic, Washington, January 28, 1989. At night, Christopher, 4, was a passenger in a car that struck ice, left the highway, and plunged 75 feet into Tunnel Creek. The car sank quickly. Johnson, 26, carpenter, witnessed the accident. Despite the freezing air temperature and frigid water, and hampered by darkness, Johnson descended to the creek, then waded and swam to the submerged car. He dived several times, partially entering the car until he located Christopher. Johnson pulled Christopher from the car and surfaced with him. He then swam to the bank, towing Christopher, and revived him with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Christopher required hospital treatment for hypothermia, and he recovered.
