Dee G. McHaney, 36, salesman, saved Elizabeth E. Wyche, 12, from drowning, Longview, Texas, August 6, 1929. While swimming in the Sabine River, Elizabeth became frightened and grabbed her father who was swimming close to her. After a struggle, her father, with difficulty, freed himself and swam to the bank. McHaney, partly clothed, swam 40 feet from a bar to Elizabeth. She grabbed him and wrapped her legs around him, and they were momentarily submerged twice before McHaney succeeded in breaking her hold by striking her. He tried to swim with her toward the bank, but they drifted 150 feet in deep water. McHaney then by accident got footing in water to his shoulders on a submerged log. Soon afterward a boat was brought to him, and he and Elizabeth were towed to the bar.
