Deanna Jeanne Kroeger died as the result of saving Lavonne E. Alkire from drowning, Oroville, California, March 4, 1950. While playing on the bank of the Feather River, Lavonne, 12, slipped and fell into very cold water 20 feet deep and flailed her arms to stay afloat three feet from the bank. Deanna, 13, schoolgirl, who was a poor swimmer, jumped fully clothed into the water and rose near Lavonne. Placing her hands against Lavonne’s back, Deanna thrust her to the bank, where others aided Lavonne from the water. In her effort to push Lavonne, Deanna was carried farther from the bank and began floundering. She drifted 20 feet in a swift current and suddenly sank. She was swept rapidly downstream, rose briefly twice, and then sank and was drowned. 42423-3792
