David M. Hamler died attempting to save Frederick J. Liefer from drowning, Anaheim Landing, California, September 22, 1918. While paddling in a surfboat in the Pacific Ocean, Liefer, 35, automobile dealer, was thrown into deep water by breakers, which capsized his boat. He swam to neck-deep water 75 to 100 feet from shore and attempted to maintain himself in the surf, which was very rough, but he was carried several times by the current into deep water. After two men had swum to Liefer but had returned to shore without having aided him, Hamler, 31, assistant city engineer, waded about 50 feet from shore toward Liefer. Efforts were being made by others to get a rope to Liefer, and in the confusion Hamler was drowned unnoticed by the others. Liefer finally succeeded in swimming to shore. 20495-1756
