David F. Harrison saved Scott A. Carney from drowning, Kennebunk Beach, Maine, January 28, 1979. On an ice floe six feet square, Scott, 11, was carried to the mouth of the Mousam River. As the floe was about to move out into the ocean, Scott jumped into the water. He could make no progress swimming and was carried into the ocean. Harrison, 18, high school student, entered the water and swam to the aid of Scott, reaching him 300 feet from shore. Towing Scott, Harrison swam back to wadable water within 25 feet of shore, where another person met them and aided in removing Scott from the water.
