David B. Jordan, 13, schoolboy, saved M. Elizabeth Keerans, 14, from drowning, Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, July 17, 1916. Elizabeth was floating with the aid of water wings in Banks Channel and was carried by the current to a point 80 feet from shore, where the water was six feet deep. She tried to touch bottom, lost her water wings, and went under the surface twice. David waded from shallow water and swam 20 feet to her. She began to go down again, and David took hold of her arm. She took hold of him, and they went under the surface momentarily. David tried to swim toward shore with her, but the current carried them farther from shore. When they had drifted about 115 feet and David was making slight progress toward shore, a man swam to Elizabeth, drew her and David to wadable water, and took Elizabeth, who was semiconscious, to shore. David waded to shore. 16892-1595
