Darryl W. Lastiwka rescued Deborah A. Anderson from burning, St. Catharines, Ontario, November 30, 1989. Miss Anderson, 21, was in her apartment when fire broke out in the living room and filled the apartment with dense smoke. A resident of the adjoining apartment, Lastiwka, 29, carpenter, was alerted; he went to Miss Anderson’s apartment door and called to her. Hearing a noise from inside the apartment, Lastiwka got down on his hands and knees and, despite the smoke, which precluded visibility, and intense heat, he crawled about 15 feet into the apartment, finding Miss Anderson unconscious on the kitchen floor. Grasping her by the ankles, Lastiwka dragged her to the door, then picked her up and carried her outside to safety. Miss Anderson was hospitalized two weeks for treatment of smoke inhalation and second-degree burns. She recovered. Lastiwka sustained minor smoke inhalation, from which he recovered.
