Darren L. McKinney rescued a woman from assault, Washington, D.C., April 1, 1997. A 20-year-old woman was in the foyer of an apartment building to deliver a pizza when a 17-year-old boy entered the building and attempted to rob her at knifepoint. A resident of the building, McKinney, 38, saw the assault and shouted at the assailant to leave. As the assailant continued his robbery attempt, McKinney rushed him, taking him across the foyer and out the building’s front door. They struggled in front of the building, where McKinney disarmed the assailant and held him until police arrived shortly and arrested him. McKinney sustained a black eye and abrasions, from which he recovered.
