Danny L. Hitchings saved Timothy W. Pfautsch from drowning, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, June 23, 1969. When Timothy, 17, groundskeeper, went to the aid of a man trapped in a reverse current below a dam in a creek, he felt himself being pulled into the current which was spinning the man head over heels. Timothy managed to move to the dam and grasp its edge; and he then called for help. Hitchings, 29, salesman, entered the creek and made his way upstream to the edge of the deep-water area below the dam. He called to Timothy to try to move to him. Timothy pushed himself away from the dam but then called out that he could no longer help himself. Hitchings jumped into the turbulent water and swam to Timothy. Both felt the pull of the current; but Hitchings was able to aid Timothy in reaching shallow water, from where they waded to the bank.
