Daniel R. Jessup died attempting to save Jeremy S. Jessup from drowning, Six Lakes, Michigan, August 6, 1991. Jeremy, 16, and others in his party were wading in First Lake near the bank when Jeremy stepped over a drop-off into deep water. A non-swimmer, he struggled, drawing the attention of others, including his brother, Daniel, 23, poultry processing factory worker. Although he was a poor swimmer and was fully clothed, Daniel immediately waded toward Jeremy, but then he too stepped into the deep water and submerged. Divers from the sheriff’s department arrived and shortly recovered the brothers, but neither could be revived.
