Daniel M. Ivins, 30, school principal, attempted to save Mary Grayce Jarvis, 19, from a fall, Ivy, Tennessee, September 10, 1938. While sliding on smooth slippery rock covered with moss in Bullet Creek, Miss Jarvis lost her footing and drifted in shallow water with increasing momentum toward the brink of a fall that dropped 30 feet to rocks. She fainted. Ivins ran and lunged 12 feet to Miss Jarvis, reaching her when she was within a few inches of the brink, and tried to pull her backward. He lost his footing, and he and Miss Jarvis went over the fall and dropped onto jagged rocks. Miss Jarvis was seriously injured but recovered. Ivins suffered a comminuted fracture of his left heel and other injuries and was fully disabled for more than seven weeks.
