Daniel J. Kanning died after attempting to save Frederick I. Evans, Jr., from suffocation, Redmond, Washington, July 27, 1989. Evans, 49, entered a 25-foot-deep, storm-drain manhole and was overcome in its oxygen-deficient atmosphere. A co-worker, Kanning, 37, truck driver, was approaching the scene when he was flagged down and alerted to the situation. He went to the manhole and immediately entered it for Evans. Rescue personnel who arrived shortly removed both Evans and Kanning, who were unconscious. The men were revived and hospitalized, but Evans died the following day, and Kanning, four days later.
