Dale Robert Layton saved Lawrence Supnet from being struck by a train, Canby, Oregon, November 17, 1988. Supnet, 28, was attempting to cross a railroad track when his wheelchair became stuck on the track on which a passenger train approached at 60 m.p.h. Having just parked his car nearby, Layton, 64, retired funeral director, saw Supnet’s predicament, then saw the approaching train. He immediately ran to Supnet, grasped the handles of the wheelchair, and pulled the wheelchair backward, off the track. The front end of the train, which did not slow, then passed, barely missing them.
