D. Christopher Mahoney, 17, gardener’s apprentice, died attempting to save D. Joseph Breen, 18, printer’s apprentice, from drowning, Lynn, Massachusetts, July 9, 1916. Breen, who could not swim, fell from a canoe on Flax Pond, 50 feet from shore, where the water was 20 feet deep. Christopher was thrown into the water five feet from Breen. He started swimming for shore but then turned and swam back to Breen. Breen grasped Christopher, and after bobbing up and down several times, both sank and were drowned. 16666-1292
