Cyrus C. Milam, 17, laborer, died saving Shelona M. Witter, 16, from drowning, Silcott, Washington, June 23, 1918. Shelona was taken into deep water holding to a rowboat in the Snake River. She attempted to swim to wadable water but began to go under the surface. A man in the boat dived to her, and she grasped him, and they went under the surface momentarily. The man called for help. Cyrus, who was dressed, waded from the bank and swam five to 10 feet to Shelona, who grasped him. The man with her broke her hold on him and swam to the bank. Cyrus supported Shelona until her stepfather reached her and drew her to wadable water. Cyrus then sank and was drowned. Shelona was unconscious but revived. 19284-1519
